The Mets beat the Cardinals 5-3 in yesterday’s spring training victory. Couple of great signs in the win, that is worth mentioning.
Edwin Diaz
The Mets closer is having a great start to his spring. The dominant arm of Edwin Diaz came back in 2020 and so far he shows he is the dominant arm the Mets traded for. In his second spring outing, Diaz struck out two and got a grounder. His fastball got a ton of swing and misses, mostly in an overpowering strikeout of Molina.
Jeurys Familia
Another arm that will be very important for the Mets pen, showed himself. Familia has shown a ton of movement, plus hit 98 on his fastball multiple times. His control doesn’t even need to be league average for him to be dominant, as he is so difficult to hit with that movement. He also averaged 92.5 mph on his splitter in his dominant scoreless inning.
Miguel Castro
Another big piece of the bullpen shined in the win. Miguel Castro threw a perfect frame, getting two strikeouts on his nasty slider. Some know that I am a big Castro fan and believe he is going to make a big step forward. That FB/slider combo is absolutely filthy.
Ronny Mauricio
The young Mauricio is having an amazing Spring. The 19 year old short stop came thru in the seventh, with a big 2 out, 2 RBI, go ahead hit. Mauricio is having a .909 OPS so far this spring. He was send to minor league camp, but we might still see him get some at bats during MLB Spring Training.
