News struck yesterday that Mets star starter Kodai Senga sat out Thursday’s workout as doctors diagnosed the RHP with a moderate posterior capsule strain.

Through beat writer Anthony DiComo of MLB.com , it’s being reported that Senga will indeed start the season on the Injured List and will be there for an extended and unknown period of time. Right now, they just don’t know much, it’s a time game.

So the rotation will be Luis Severino, Jose Quintana, Adrian Houser, Sean Manaea, Tyler Megill with David Peterson, Joey Luchessi, and Jose Butto all vying for their opportunity. While the depth and quality of depth is decent, the rotation is full of 3’s.

This is terrible news, not as much for the 2024 season since the expectations are in the dumps, but for the rest Kodai Senga’s Major League career.

History has shown us through Mark Prior, Jon Maine, Matt Harvey, Stephen Strasburg, and many more, that shoulder injuries impacted their ability to stay healthy and just as importantly effective.

Senga finished the first year of his 5 year, $75M contract going 12-7 with a 2.98 ERA. The Japanese pitcher threw 166.1 innings in his 29 starts, while finishing second for the Rookie of The Year Award.

And while the organization is loaded with prospects, it doesn’t feel like the Mets are ready to let go of their controllable talent.

I don’t see both LHP’s Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell being the answer, let alone just the one of them.

Let’s face it, even before Senga’s injury, many fans would’ve welcomed a front end starter to this rotation, one that has been missing so much since deGrom’s departure.

However, now if the Mets don’t pull off a deal with one of Montgomery or Snell, and make a huge splash on the trade market for an ace starter, this team is done for.

With a ton of pressure already on David Stearns, I expect this to put him, and any man really, over the edge. But, if he can turn things around with in the next three to five seasons, it’ll be worth it as he’ll be hoisted along the side of Steve Cohen, above all in Queens.

However, expect a bumpy ride this year.
