Mets Make Offer To Matz

According to Anthony DiComo the Mets have made an offer to Steven Matz. Matz coming off a solid year with the Blue Jays, after the Mets traded him for Sean Reid-Foley, Yennsy Diaz and Josh Winkowski during last off-season.

The Baseball Nerd

Matz went 14-7 with a 3.82 ERA over 150.2 innings in 2021. Over that span he pitched to a 3.79FIP and 1.33 WHIP. While his strikeout numbers went down to 8.6 per nine, he also had a career low 1.1 homeruns per nine. That coming in the AL East is worth noting.

In 2021 Matz limited hard hit contact and featured a solid walk rate. His barrel percentage against went from 13.5 in to 7 in 2021, which was in the 61 percentiles.

The 30 year old got some great success with his two main pitches as his Change-up and Sinker combined for a minus 18 run value. His breaking stuff on the other hand combined for plus 10 run value.

The Mets will have enough competition for Matz services as he had around 8 offers to choose from. I personally would like to see the Mets go a different direction than Matz and go with an arm like Jon Gray at the back end of the rotation. But with the starting pitching market going so fast, it’s go time.

The San Francisco Giants made a couple of moves to keep rotation arms. Anthony DiSclafani and Alex Wood stay in San Francisco.
