The Mets have gotten a lot of success out of numerous bullpen arms so far this year. Besides the late inning arms in Diaz and Castro, two other arms have done a terrific job. Jeurys Familia and Robert Gsellman have pitched well in the early season.

Jeurys Familia:

There is a lot to like in what Familia has shown. Over 4.2 innings the righty has a 1.93 ERA with a 1.71 WHIP. The WHIP is very high, but is mainly high because of bad luck.

As you can see above, Familia is allowing a lot of soft contact. His Expected Batting Average is in the 94 percentile. He isn’t missing a ton of bats, but when he allows contact, it’s without much damage.

Yes, his WHIP is high, but it’s not because of an alarming amount of walks. Familia has allowed just 2 walks in 4.2 but 6 hits is a fairly high rate in those innings.

However, as mentioned, it’s bad luck. Familia expected slash line against is .158/.199/.187. That’s top in the majors:

XBA: Top 6% of the League

XWOBA: Top 2% of the League

XSLG: Top 1% of the League

Familia his expected ERA stands at 1.46. So great signs from the 31 year old so far. In the tweet below you can read some great analytics about Familia his sinker from Mathew Brownstein.

Yes, I am aware that it’s a small samplesize, but still the early signs are pretty great. A good Familia would make this bullpen very deep. So let’s hope he keeps it going.
