MetsJunkies Recap: Mets drop Snakes in Arizona

With another amazing Jacob deGrom performance in the books, not only were the Mets able to be victorious, but they were able to put another W in deGrom’s Win column. The New York Mets ace was phenomenal, especially given that he was pitching in the tough environment in Phoenix, Arizona.

While Mets fans were chanting “M-V-P!” for deGrom at Chase Field, it was the Mets offense that pulled through for the right-hander. Jose Peraza and the newly added Mason Williams started the third off with a pair of singles before Francisco Lindor would hit a sharp line drive single to set up a pair of RBI’s for Pete Alonso.

After another hit by Peraza, a double this time, Jacob deGrom once again would help his own cause with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth.

With deGrom cruising on the hill, the two-time Cy Young award winner would retire the first 13 batters he faced before allowing a single to Carson Kelly in the fifth.

“What we’re watching is definitely something special. In my mind, he’s in a league of his own,” Arizona starting pitcher Merrill Kelly said. “The fact that he has the stuff that he has and can command it the way that he does, I think, is probably what sets him apart the most. You know, there’s a lot of guys in this league that throw 90-100 [mph], but he pitches with it, and it’s relentless, and it’s every single pitch.”

The Mets tacked on two more runs in the seventh when slugging first baseman Pete Alonso took Merrill Kelly yard for a two-run home run. The long-ball would go down as Pete’s seventh of the 2021 season.

Miguel Castro and Jeurys Familia both combined to pitch 2.1 innings without allowing a run to score. Both pitchers currently have a sub-three ERA and have come up big this year.

The Mets will square up against the Diamondbacks again at the same time (9:40 PM EST) as the boys look to keep their momentum and winning streak going.
