Jonathan Villar has been pretty clutch since joining the Mets, especially while in the starting lineup. Today, Villar lead the fourth inning off with a home run off of Braves starter Charlie Morton.
Former New York Mets outfielder Guillermo Heredia would put Atlanta on the board with a well hit single. Pitcher Charlie Morton would immediately follow Heredia with an unorthodox RBI single of his own, putting the Braves up by two.
Unfortunately, it wouldn’t end just yet. David Peterson would throw a 58-footer causing a wild pitch and that would allow Heredia to cross the plate.
So after 4.2 innings pitched, Peterson would be removed after pitching an excellent four innings out of the gate. He would be charged with three earned runs on five hits while walking one and striking out five.
Drew Smith would come in to relieve Peterson and was spot on as he went 1.1 scoreless innings, keeping his ERA at 0.00 so far.
In the top half of the seventh, Jose Peraza would lace a double down the line that would push across Dom Smith to score. Tomas Nido would crash through again with his own single to put the Mets up 4-3, the catcher is 5-9 in the series and has driven in three runs.
Miguel Castro, who opened in last night’s contest, came on to pitch in the seventh as he put down the middle of the Braves order in yet another impressive outing. Not only did the righty get the job done, but his pitches had a tremendous amount of movement on them as he was clearly effective. Castro’s ERA is now 2.97 on the year.
However, Aaron Loup would come into the game in the eighth and give up three consecutive hits to start the inning, giving up the lead. He would be removed for Jacob Barnes.
Barnes and the Mets did a great job of getting out of the eighth inning with only giving up one run, however Ronald Acuna Jr would hit a walk-off home run off of Barnes to lead off the ninth.
The Mets would drop the game, 5-4, however they did take the series against the Braves. After a day off tomorrow, the Mets will be back on Friday to take on Miami Marlins.
