Three Mets who will likely regress in 2021

We all know every Met won’t have the best 2021. It’s almost impossible and unrealistic to ask. Sometimes, players regress. Here’s three Mets who meet that criteria for 2021.

Steven Matz: Steven Matz has not fully found his rhythm in New York despite a new extension deal. He has struggled on the mound, but the Mets hope he will turn things around. Here’s why I say this is a big mistake on the Mets’ behalf to try and bring Matz back.

For 2020 alone, in 9 games, Matz went 0-5 with a 9.68 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP.

Matz needs to get it together in 2021. He has a new 1 year, $5,200,000 guaranteed. It’s time he steps up and gets the job done, although I don’t see it happening this upcoming season.

Noah Syndergaard: Syndergaard was out all 2020 due to Tommy John surgery. It’s unclear how much he can effectively contribute to this team needy of starting pitching. He had a regression before in 2019, here’s a look at Syndergaard in 2019.

In 2019, Syndergaard went 10-8 with a 4.28 ERA. In 2016, he went 14-9 with a 2.60 ERA.

Big, big difference. I’m not saying he can’t redeem himself one day, but that takes time. 2021 won’t be that year.

Amed Rosario: Due to the upcoming star in Andrés Giménez, Rosario will likely be used all over the field. I’m not saying Rosario will regress stats wise completely, but be slightly off. Let’s take a look at Rosario in 2019 and 2020.

In 2019, Rosario hit 15 home runs and 72 RBI’s with a .287 Batting Average.

In 2020, Rosario hit 4 home runs, 15 batted in, with a .252 batting average.

Obviously, the 2020 numbers are from the COVID-19 shortened season. I’m saying that the stress of being inserted all over and possibly seeing a little less playing time could affect his play.

It is what it is about Rosario, as this is obviously one player I did not want to see on this list nor does he completely deserve to be on here. Things just happen. The sky would have been the limit for Rosario given other circumstances.

Here’s my list of players who will likely fall short of their 2021 goals. It’s sad to see them on here, but, may they see better fortunes in another season.

  1. Unless Matz is out of the game in 2022, I doubt he could be worse than 2020. Syndergaard is coming off surgery so hes rebuilding not regressing. I also think the reports of Roseys demise are exaggerated by our friends at the Post just looking for clicks.
