The non tender deadline is about a month away and the Mets have some players that could get non tendered. Some interresting decisions looming in that department for the Mets to make. So which four could be non tendered in my opinion?

Robert Gsellman: This one is pretty obvious. Gsellman hasn’t been good for years now and is as replaceable as can be. For example, look how a minor league signing like Erasmo Ramires performed in 2020. With the Mets signing Nick Tropeano, he can easily take Gsellman his role. Gsellman has a career 4.67 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP and an even 0 WAR. Again, he is replaceable as can be.

Guillermo Heredia: Heredia was claimed off waivers from the Pirates during the 2020 season. He played 7 games for the Mets and hit well. He had a .866 OPS, mostly because of 2 homeruns in those limited games. Still, Heredia is a replaceable depth player and will get a MiLB deal somewhere, maybe even with the Mets. But there is no need to keep Heredia for more than league minimum.

Steven Matz: This one is more difficult to me. Matz was terrible but how much should we judge his 2020 performance? Plus the Mets don’t have to much starting pitching depth to just non tender guys with track record as a solid back end starter. Matz will likely get around 5-6 mil in abritration, which isn’t expensive for a starter who made at least 30 starts with an ERA between 3.97-4.23 in 18/19. Is that more expected out of Matz in 2021, or has the big drop off begun in 2020? I could still see Matz being penciled in as the Mets fifth starter. With him not performing in the rotation, I can see his stuff work out of the pen. We can also see the Mets just cutting him and move on from the Long Island lefty? Difficult decision.

Chasen Shreve: One of the Mets positive surprises in the 2020 season, was Chasen Shreve. The lefty was a strikeout machine with his devastating splitter. Shreve came to the Mets on a minor league deal and was a gem pick-up. Over 25 innings, he pitched to a solid 3.96 ERA and his Whiff percentile was in the 96th best. Still his fastball got hit fairly hard as his exit velo against, was highest in his career. With the Mets having a lot of their bullpen already in house, I think they want to aim higher than Shreve for the limited room they have. I do think Shreve can get a MLB deal somewhere, which makes his return on a MiLB deal unlikely.
