Free Agent Target: Alex Colome

Alex Colome is a name that has circulated throughout the Mets community in the past and rightfully so. The right handed reliever has had a spectacular eight year career until this point, so I’m surprised that MLBTR has Colome returning to the White Sox for $6M on a one year pact.

MetNews put out a figure that makes a little more sense with a predicted deal at $36M for three years, but I’d probably meet in between the two. I think $20-22M would be sufficient enough to lock him down through the 2022 season.

In eight seasons, Colome appeared in 326 games and owns a 28-23 record while posting a 2.95 ERA. In the 424 innings that he’s pitched, Colome has struck out a solid 385 batters while keeping runners off base with a 1.17 WHIP. Not to mention the 138 saves he has under his belt, 47 of which came in 2017 with the Tampa Bay Rays.

But in order to acquire Colome, the Mets would more than likely need to deal one of the right-handed relievers they already have in stock. Dellin Betances just exercised his option for the 2021 season as did veteran reliever Brad Brach. With both pitchers having underwhelming seasons, they might not be easy to unload.

Back to Colome, there is a bit of downside in his numbers that need to be acknowledged. MLBTR has pointed out that the righty was in the bottom 2% in pertains to average exit velocity during the 2019 campaign.

These numbers provided by StatCast however didn’t translate into his performance during the 2020 season as he owned a 0.81 ERA in 21 games while also earning 12 saves. There isn’t a bullpen in the Majors that wouldn’t take those numbers, but the cost has to be right. Especially with a Mets squad that has been burned by bad relievers in the past.
