The proof is in the pitching: Here’s a look at the two pitchers in 2020 despite way different contracts.
Jacob DeGrom is making $137 Million and for 5 years. He has a 1.67 ERA with a 4-1 record in 2020 so far.
Meanwhile, with the New York Yankees, Gerrit Cole is making $324 million over 9 years, is sporting a 3.20 ERA with a 5-3 record so far.
It is during a pandemic, but the stats for 2020 won’t lie. So far, DeGrom appears to have the better record and stats while Cole could be said to be letting the Yankees down with a disappointing season in spite of a huge contract last off- season.
DeGrom dazzles each time he takes the mound for the pitching needy Mets, putting out quality starts. Cole seems off, but like I said, it’s early still, he still has time to turn things around speaking from a baseball perspective.
To sum this all up, when you throw the DeGrom vs. Cole debate in the air, DeGrom appears to have won this contract battle thus far. He looks solid compared to a struggling Cole.
