Free Agent Reliever options: Héctor Rondón

The Venezuelan born right hander is coming off of two decent seasons with the Houston Astros after spending five seasons with the Chicago Cubs. The on-again, off-again closer has accumulated 92 saves in his seven year career however it’s likely that that chapter of his career has passed, making Rondon a candidate for a roster spot in the New York Mets bullpen. While he wouldn’t be the closer of the team, he definitely would provide much needed experience and depth to a major point of weakness.

The now 31-year old reliever had his best season with the Chicago Cubs in 2015 where he appeared in 72 games and maintained a 1.67 ERA while striking out 69 and saving 30 games in 70.0 innings pitched.

Hector Rondón a.k.a. “Rondi”, signed a two-year contract with the Houston Astros going into the 2018 season worth $17M however now that Rondón isn’t closing out games and is two years older, it’ll be interesting to see how the Free Agent market dictates his value as we head into the 2020 season.

During the 2019 campaign, Rondón pitched to a 3.71 ERA in 62 games with his strikeouts numbers taking a big hit. The former Astros’ reliever struck out 48 batters in 60.2 innings pitched, or 7.1 strikeouts per every nine innings however isn’t far removed from 2018 when he averaged 10.2 strikeouts per nine.

Alongside closing out and saving 92 games in his career, Rondón has struck out 418 batters in 416.0 innings pitched (9.0K SO/9) while owning a 3.29 ERA and 3.49 FiP in exactly six years of service time dating back to his rookie season in 2013.

While there’s no telling if the Mets are actually interested in pursuing the right handed reliever once he becomes available to the market, at least from my perspective off of the couch, I do think it’s something and someone worth doing their due diligence over.
