Sunday Afternoon Matchup: Mets vs Royals

While the New York Mets were able to even things out with the Kansas City Royals last night, today they will look to take the series. After losing J.D. Davis to a calf strain on Friday night, the Mets may still be without their slugger on Sunday as well, for precautionary reasons.

New York Mets starter Zack Wheeler will look to redeem himself after having one of his rougher performances of the season in Atlanta against the Braves. The righty gave up 12 hits in five innings in which Wheeler would eventually take the loss.

Overall, Wheeler is 9-7 while sporting an ERA of 4.36, a 1.27 WHIP, and while striking out 151 batters in 144.1 innings pitched. This will be Zack Wheeler’s first career start in Kauffman Stadium.

The Kansas City Royals will hand the ball over to starter Glenn Sparkman this afternoon after the righty came off of a quality start in which the Royals lost to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. At home, Sparkman owns a 2.84 ERA in 12 outings at Kauffman Stadium.

Throughout the season, Sparkman is 3-8 with an ERA of 5.45, a 1.44 WHIP, while striking out 58 batters in 99.0 innings pitched.
