After another tough extra inning loss in San Francisco on Friday night, the Mets are back at it again on Saturday afternoon at around 4:05 PM EST with fill-in pitcher Walker Lockett going against “The Shark” Jeff Samardzija.
What would have been a showcase start for an auditioning Zack Wheeler has now instead turned to an auditioning start for Walker Lockett as a temporary replacement for a potentially traded Wheeler.
Locket hasn’t pitched much at the Major League level this season and when he has, he hasn’t exactly been effective. The large framed right hander has an 0-1 record as well as a 11.74 ERA to match, he’s struck out six in 7.2 innings pitched.
However, Jeff Samardzija is another Trade candidate that’s taking the hill and the veteran right hander is on 3-start stretch in which he owns a 1.66 ERA and 17 strikeouts while only walking three.
Overall, Samardzija has a 3.93 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a win/loss record of 7-7 with 89 strikeouts in 105.1 innings pitched. Another good start from Samardzija could net the Giants a decent return for the righty, if he is in fact on the trading block.
The Mets will send down Jacob Rhame in order to make room for Lockett.
