After their series in Miami, the Mets will now face off against the Minnesota Twins in the Twin City. This will be the second 2-game set that these two teams will face each-other, both teams split the series earlier on in the season.
The Mets plan to send Steven Matz to the hill after the lefty has made a couple of appearances out of the bullpen before the end of the first half. Zack Wheeler was initially scheduled to take the hill, however Wheeler is now dealing with shoulder fatigue and is on the Injured List.
Matz is 5-6 with a 4.89 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and has 78 strikeouts in 81.0 innings pitched. However, in his last 7 games, relief outings included, Matz has been pitching to a horrid 7.03 ERA over the stretch of 24.1 innings. This is obviously a trend that just can’t continue.
Minnesota Twins starter Michael Pineda will take on the Mets line up this evening for the Twinkies. The right hander and former Yankees pitcher has been on a roll as of late, allowing just one-run in 4 out Pineda’s last 5 starts. Not exactly Jake deGrom territory, but it’s definitely a respectable run.
Pineda is 6-4 with a 4.56 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and has rung up 84 batters in 92.2 innings pitched, so far this campaign. He’s 2-1 with a 3.40 ERA in his last seven trips to the hill for Minnesota.
