Although I like to save these segments or articles for retired players, I think it’s about time to dabble with some active players that were formerly with the Mets.

Murphy has a strong hold on a lot of Mets fans’ hearts. He’s had some really great moments with the team, he’s unfortunately had some disastrous moments, as well. Personally, like most, I loved Murphy’s bat but wanted to pull my hair out at times when it came to his defensive play.

Drafted by the New York Mets in the 13th round of the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft from Jacksonville University of Jacksonville, Florida. Drafted as a third baseman, Murphy made his MLB debut just two years later as a left fielder.

While he’s bounced around the diamond defensively, he’s only done so because he could hit the ball. I mean, like really, Murphy was a pure hitter. He may have lacked the power during his tenure with the Mets, but it eventually caught on.

If you were watching in 2015, I give a ton of credit to Yoenis Cespedes for carrying the team on his shoulders into the playoffs, however Daniel Murphy was the man that carried us to the World Series.

During the 2015 National League Divisional Series, the Mets played five games against the Los Angeles Dodgers and bat .333/.333/.810/.1.143 with a double, five runs scored, three home runs and five RBI’s in 21 plate appearances.

After winning the series, the Mets went onto sweep the Chicago Cubs in four. Murphy hit .529/.556/1.294/1.850 with a double, six runs scored, four home runs and six RBI’s in 18 plate appearances. He would go on to win the MVP award of that National League Championship Series.

Overall with the Mets, Murphy spent parts of seven seasons with the team and hit .288/.331/.424/.755 in 903 games played. He hit 228 doubles, 20 triples, 62 home runs with 402 runs driven in and scoring 422 times in 3354 at-bats and 3619 plate appearances.

Ten years after the Mets drafted and signed him, they officially let Daniel Murphy walk after he declined a 1-year qualifying offer at roughly $15M. On January 6th, 2016, he would go on to sign a 3-year deal with division rivals, the Washington Nationals. While he’s now currently on the Colorado Rockies, he’s been crushing the Mets any chance he gets and I mean he’s really been giving it to us.

The Floridian is a 3-time All-Star and a 2-time Silver Slugger Award winner as well as the 2015 NLCS MVP. He has a career 18.4 WAR in 4938 at-bats to date.

So however you may feel about the utility infielder, he gave us one hell of a great offensive run in the 2015 playoffs and has always been the type of player to give it 110%, even if his team is down by 10. Daniel Murphy is a true gamer.
