Wednesday Night’s Pitching Matchup: Mets vs Phillies

These final two games of the series may be somewhat interesting. Tensions between the Mets and Phillies have existed for decades, and even though players have come and gone, the tension is just as alive as ever.

After a blow-up of an inning, a hits batsman, an ejected manager, it’s might be safe to assume these next two games could get a little buck. I assume if something were to happen, both teams will save it for the last game of the series, in order to avoid 2 straight games of fighting.

Jason Vargas will take the mound for the Mets in the third game of this four-game series. This will be Vargas’ first time pitching since he threatened to knock reporter Tim Healey out in the Mets clubhouse.

Vargas, the veteran lefty, is 3-3 with a 3.75 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts in 60.0 innings pitched. In his last 39.2 innings pitched, the crafty pitcher owns a 2.72 ERA in 7 starts.

Phillies right hander Nick Pivetta is coming off of a rough start against the Washington Nationals in which he allowed 6 runs in 5.1 innings. Pivetta owns a 5.54 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and a 4-2 record with 45 strikeouts in his 50.1 innings pitched.
