Shortstop is a premier position in the modern era of Major League Baseball, right now, the Mets carry three shortstops that can potentially not only be above average, but they could be amongst the elite of the position.

Rosario had a rough start during the first half of the 2018 season, but he started laying off bad pitches and that made his contact on the pitches in the zone shoot off his bat. While he’s an above average shortstop on the defensive end, there’s definitely room for improvement and that could be the difference between him becoming an All-Star.

Andres Gimenez is another shortstop flying through the ranks, the 20 year old only has three Minor League seasons under his belt and he’s made it as high as Binghamton last season where he was able to play in 37 games.

Gimenez has shown great discipline in his three seasons in the Minors, he maintains a .290/ .375/ .413/ .788 slash line in 1006 at bats. While he does show the ability to get on base and can swipe some bags, there will be questions about his power.

The best shortstop of them all very well may be the 17 year old Ronny Mauricio, the switch hitting infielder stands at 6’3″ at his young age. He only weighs 166 lbs., however some time in the weight room over the next few years will most certainly help him fill out.

He has a plus power grade and could potentially remain at shortstop for several years to come. In 57 games in the Mets rookie leagues, Mauricio hit .273/ .304/ .410/ .713, in his first taste of professional baseball. Scouts estimate his MLB ETA to be in 2022.

The team obviously can’t man all three at the position at the same time, so someone like Andres Gimenez may be used as trade bait for a potential MLB roster upgrade.
