Mets and deGrom begin negotiations

NYT writer James Wagner and Andy Martino of SNY have reported that the two sides have begun “preliminary” discussions in regards to a contract extension for the National League Cy Young Award Winner.

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen has removed himself from the negotiation process due to BVW previously being deGrom’s agent.

deGrom has two years left of arbitration left before he hits free agency but I believe it’s in the Mets best interest to extend his contract as soon as possible. I don’t work in any economic fields however I’d only imagine that if the two sides agree to a deal sooner than later, the Mets would benefit from time not affecting inflation.

Besides the monetary benefits, extending deGrom before he hits free agency is a huge gesture of good will. Yes, this is a business relationship however acts like these go a long way, even after the expiration of the contract.
