The Mets have come to terms with their former 15th round pick of the 2011 MLB amateur draft, Phillip Evans. This comes just days after he was removed from the Mets 40-Man Roster & elected free agency. Evans, a infielder made his MLB debut last year on September 8th, 2017 & only has 33 AB’s under his belt in which he collected 10 hits.

The Mets signed Evans to a Minor League deal & likely means he’ll start the year out in Las Vegas with a Spring Training invite attached to the deal, assuming the Mets infield will be looking the same as it did in the 2017 season. I think it’s safe to say the Mets will not be seeing Evan’s till September, in which case he would have to be added back onto the 40-Man roster.

Corné’s cut:

Evans is a nice depth option to have. He can play a very solid third and second and is a line drive hitter. He showed that in limited time in the Bigs but don’t let the .303 average fool you. Evans had a .400 batting average on balls in play (which is extremely high) and his exit velo was way under league average which shows he got lucky on numerous occasions.

Still Evans is a nice player to have in AAA for when the Mets need an infielder. He played third, second and short plus 17 games in LF in LV showing his versatility.

If the Mets need Evans a lot in the bigs that would not be ideal. But we know with the injuries that he might be needed.
